Travel in the land of others - Flavours of Toruń

Having written much here about a city that not / 10 interest was Toruń face, we must say that after Krakow, this is probably the most beautiful city I saw in Poland. Truth be told Toruń also benefited from the same miracle to be spared destruction during the II GG. And like Krakow, one of its best views is the front of the Vistula. I went there twice and only regret not having gone over.
Basically the city began to develop due to the Teutonic Knights icos, something that lasted between the ages 13, 14 and half of the fifteenth century (when the power went to the kings of Poland) and the village hall in the central square of the most obvious reminders of this presence (as one of the knights of the castle little remains). Over the following centuries, the city continued to grow even more and be more prosperous (the result of its location near the river, and being the last major city before the mouth in the Baltic and in Gdańsk) and mercantile. In the mid-seventeenth century, had almost as much population as Warsaw (more than 15,000 people). And if the Swedish invasion did the damage already was with the partition and the passage of the city to the hands of Prussia, who Toruń was losing its importance, because it was isolated from the cereal trade route coming from the southeast (those territories which became Russian hands on). Fruit of the great Polish resistance to the process of Germanization, was the nearby town of Bydgoszcz , being "chosen" to develop. Hence, today Bydgoszcz Tues 360,000 people, while it is Toruń by 200000. But more about the city's history can be read here .
Copernicus City, a college town (sort of Coimbra, but with twice the population), a medieval center closed to traffic, offers many points of interest for a weekend well spent. Warsaw is a 3 hour train from Poznan and Lodz are 2.30h. For those who are in Portugal, a cheap way in low season will do Porto-Dusseldorf-Bydgoszcz by Ryanair that hopefully will stay for 150EUR (round trip).
